Motorola Solutions: the "other" Motorola

Built In Chicago just published its Top 100 Digital Companies in Chicago list. Being the crazy Motorola fan I am, I searched for the company I love, only to find out that Motorola Solutions - not Motorola Mobility - had made the list and it was top 10.

And it got me thinking...why do we pay so much attention to Motorola Mobility and get obsessed with it? There are other Motorolas out there! One is called Motorola Home and the other one happens to be a huge 12-Billion-dollar company with around 20,000 employees that is very innovative, called Motorola Solutions.

What is Motorola Solutions?

It was mid-2010 when both co-CEOs, Greg Brown and Sanjay Jha were discussing the separation Motorola, Inc., the company that changed the 20th Century and released many iconic and innovative products, into two different companies. The company was #1 in public-safety, retail and home-networking, but its smartphone business had been hit by the smartphone era and the strong competition from Asian players. The mobile business was hurting the other divisions and the overall company, and they had to act fast.

The original plan was to split the company in 2009 but the huge 2008 Downturn delayed the split until 2011. Both kept the Motorola brand and trademarks, with the right to use them forever. Motorola, Inc. changed its name to Motorola Solutions, Inc. and separated its Mobility division. Motorola Mobility kept the Home and Mobile divisions, while Solutions kept the Enterprise and public-safety divisions.

Both companies had their own fates, and while Mobility was absorbed by Google and then Lenovo (and still makes the best smartphones out there while its accessories and Home divisions were sold or licensed to other companies), Motorola Solutions became the boring one to consumers, or the one we know little about: some even call it the other Motorola. But the truth is that its products are actually more important than any smartphone or smartwatch we can buy.

What is public-safety?

Motorola Solutions leads public-safety, so what is it? It's everything we don't see. It's all the communications between agencies, firefighters, paramedics, industry workers, policemen and so on. Motorola Solutions does what Motorola did 88 years ago: connect people in real-time to make the world a safer and better place.

From two-way radio products to software solutions that enable faster communication between first responders, Motorola Solutions is there to improve productivity, prevent disasters and reduce crime.

Cool Motorola Solutions products:

WAVE
Wave is a smart PTT platform that allows you to communicate with radios, PCs, landlines and smartphones to increase productivity. This platform is available to all smartphone users (download).

LEX L10 smartphone
Yes, they make smartphones too, although you won't be able to buy one of these. LEX L10 is a rugged quad-core smartphone that runs a secure Android version.

MOTOTRBO
TRBO - not Droid Turbo - is a range of two-way radios designed for organizations, businesses and industry workers that comes with applications and accessories that will allow you to work more efficiently in the harshest conditions without the bulk of traditional radios.

Why should Motorola fans care?

Through the years, we haven't taken Motorola Solutions seriously or simply didn't care enough, because we couldn't buy their products or interact with the company. But it's time we start looking at the company and stop considering it the other one.

Solutions just moved its headquarters to Chicago, is focusing on intelligence and software solutions, is worth 12B with its stock price at $73, and it's starting to interact with consumers and businesses on social media. And most importantly, Solutions embraces its legacy more than any other Motorola.

We should definitely stop considering this as the other Motorola. Fans should be proud of its accomplishments while regular consumers should know that it's making our world a safer and more productive place.

Motorola: If you can update the Moto G4 Play, then what's the problem in updating Moto G3/Turbo?

A day back, Motorola revealed its plans to update Moto Devices to Android 7.0 Nougat. The expected devices that were missing from the list were 2015 Moto G, Moto G Turbo edition, 2016 Moto E3 and Moto E3 Power.

The Moto E3 and E3 Power will probably get listed later on, but What about Moto G 3rd Generation and Moto G Turbo edition? This is unacceptable, The best selling 2015 smartphone is seeing software support dropCould it be a result of the Lenovo acquisition and subsequent job cuts? Seems It certainly could.

Motorola either needs to commit to updating the 2015 Moto G smartphones, or it needs to stop selling it.

Also Forget that thing that "Moto G3 cannot run Android Nougat because of its specifications". If The Moto G4 Play which is not that popular smartphone and features same specifications as the 2015 Moto G3 is getting Nougat update, then what's the problem in updating the G3? Moreover The Moto G Turbo edition which was expected to get Nougat is missing from the list.

Let's take a few, select quotes from Motorola users and see what they think-

Moto g 3rd gen is best budget phone ever!! And 7.0 naugot update was not listed by Motorola to moto g 3 . I got angry on Motorola I next move was not to buy Motorola phones !! Their cheating the people in form of software updates. Prashanth Reddy Nalla

Next move on moto is stop publishing and promoting such brand and their products and stop buying such idiotic products!!! Stupid lenovo-moto - Puppala Raj Kumar

Years a fan but now its time to jump ship, didnt expect this, no update for moto g turbo which is not even a year old .. Bye Bye Moto -  Vishal Kadakia

Nougat should run on Moto G Turbo Edition, I'm feeling so angry on moto!!!! - Samz Msd

This is cheating moto g3 and moto g turbo are popular phones .Motorola compulsory give the Nougat update to these phones. -Uday Kumar Chaduvula

Do you hear that, Motorola or Lenovo? Either update your Smartphones or stop selling them and start loosing your customers!

Motorola Moto E3 Power hands-on: Decent phone, but priced high

Motorola Moto E3 Power hands-on TechDroider

Weeks back, Lenovo launched the Motorola Moto E3 Power in India for ₹7,999. The Device is exclusively available on Flipkart and as reported earlier, One hundred thousand units of the smartphone got sold withing few minutes.

The Mediatek powered Lenovo-Motorola Smartphone comes with a bigger battery. I spent some time with my new Moto E3 Power and here are my first impression.

One of the great feature that Motorola Moto E3 Power offers is the 3500mAh battery, plugging it in for 15 minutes will give you up to five hours of battery life with the 10W charger.

Motorola Moto E3 Power hands-on TechDroider

Starting with the Box, It contains the Moto E3 Power itself, battery, charger, USB cable, Earphones, Manuals and a Screen Protector. The box has same design and dimensions as G4 Play box.

Out of the box, The Moto E3 Power is really a light and premium design Smartphone.

Motorola Moto E3 Power hands-on TechDroider

At the front the device has speaker grilles both above and below the display. The 5-inch screen makes this phone feel taller than the original Moto E and Moto E 2nd gen. There's a 5 MP front facing camera.

Motorola Moto E3 Power hands-on TechDroider

At the back there's a secondary microphone, a 8 MP rear camera with flash and a not so deep "Moto" Dimple. Inside removable back cover, there's two sim tray, a microSD card slot and removable battery slot.

Motorola Moto E3 Power hands-on TechDroider

Motorola Moto E3 Power hands-on TechDroider

With the metal frame, the device feels quite premium. The volume and power buttons are on the right, while the left is blank. The 3.5mm audio jack is on top, and the Micro-USB charging port is on the bottom.

Motorola Moto E3 Power hands-on TechDroider

The Device is powered with Mediatek MT6735P chipset paired with 2GB RAM. You get 16GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot that accepts cards of up to 32GB in capacity.

Overall the Moto E3 Power is a Decent Smartphone with nice specification. The high priced smartphone is not a budget king, but its a great device.

Here's what Motorola says about the new update and what it will bring to the Moto phones:

Are you ready for the sweetest OS update yet? It’s one that speaks your language (particularly if you speak fluent Emoji), offers the ability to seamlessly switch between apps with just a double-tap, more efficient notification controls and improved battery and data saver features.

The list of Motorola devices getting Nougat includes:
