The History of the RAZR: part II

We took some time after posting PART 1, but we are back again and today we want you to follow us through the challening years our beloved Motorola faced, and how it got stronger and learnt from its mistakes.

The History of the RAZR: part II

A new beginning? It seemed so. Motorola was aware of the growing popularity of smartphones, so they developed Windows Mobile and Linux phones for the mature Asian markets while Europe and the US would get RAZRs. The MotoMING, a 2006 phone, had an Intel processor, a touchscreen, and even allowed multi-tasking. The moto Q was a qwerty smartphone with Windows Mobile 6.0. But it was not enough. They needed to re-invent the Razr.

And so they did. May 2007 saw the release of the RAZR2, one of the most advanced phones at the time. Although people didn’t care about the stuff they care today, like processor and OS, the RAZR2 had Linux and was the fastest phone around, with a 500MHz processor. It even had a voice recognition software in which you could dictate an SMS or even open some phone features by voice commands. It even had an external touchscreen in which you could access many of the phone’s features. The phone was shocking, brilliant, and bloody sexy. But the iPhone’s release and competition from others, made it sell less than expected. It did become a bestseller, but it was not enough.

Motorola started to market the phone as the it-phone of 2007. Beckham would have it, Fergie would have it, so everyone else should. During its first quarters, it sold almost the same the iPhone did, but sadly, the Motorola hate bandwagon that we often see around and the press loves to jump into it, was picked up and it became cool to say Moto was not cool anymore. And if you think about it, this has happened many times since then, and then they go and love it again. 2007 is no different from late 2007 or early 2016.

Anyway, what now? Linux brought tons of issues. To begin with, it did not support 3G, something everyone demanded. In addition, the development team at Motorola was slow at getting the 3G support on Linux ready and releasing those phones. One example is the Rokr E8. It was set to be released in the summer of 2007, at the same time the RAZR2 was going to be released, and also the PEBL2 (later called Moto U9). But the software team and a component supplier caused them to be released 6 months later and ruin the product cycle. The phone was fresh and exciting. Even if it was delayed for 6 months it won Phone of the Year at CES 2008, but they released it in June 2008, 12 months after its originally planned released.

Silence before the storm. There was nothing Motorola could do. Its supplier caused them nightmares, the RAZR was still a hit but was not seen as a cool phone anymore, and the RAZR2 couldn't even sell half of what the original was selling after four years of its release. From 2008 until Q4 2009 Moto was silent. Only a few interesting devices were released like Zine ZN5 and AURA, but they were outdated because the Linux delay and supplier issues. 2008 saw the release of less Razr’s, yet they were still selling like hot cakes.

In fact, the Razr was the best selling mobile in the USA until November 2008, which is remarkable, given the fact that it was a 2004 phone. At least 45 million Razr’s were sold in 2007, and over 15 million in the following year. That's for the original one, while RAZR2 was either reaching end of life through the carriers or being terribly discounted. In fact, they kept releasing V3 variants until 2009 but the Razr2 series  didn't see any improved variant (except for a limited AT&T one which only brought to the US some features that were available in Europe).

So Moto was quiet, silent, and worried about its future. The economic downturn didn't help, the other divisions under Motorola were being affected, costs were being cut (lay-offs) and investors gave Greg Brown some awful nightmares. He's even confessed through some interviews that there were days/weeks he could not sleep. But remember, Motorola never dies: it has more lives than a cat and has had more comebacks than Jesus. The storm was about to come and Moto was going to take its crown back.

How so? We'll find out in part III.

POLL results: how would you change Moto G4?

We asked you some days ago how you would change the new Moto G4 family, and now it's time to report the results. You can check the original poll here.

The new Motorola Moto G4 is an awesome phone for sure, but how would people change it? We asked if there was something to improve, and the responses are in.

To begin with, it seems people want longer battery life, even though its battery is already quite good. In second place comes something that Motorola and Lenovo could do through a software update: people want the original boot animation back. They don't want the "moto" word when the phone boots. Instead, people want to see the beautiful Motorola logo. Maybe they could think a way to merge both, start with the M logo and then the Lenovo logo. That would be cool, and the fans would like it more than now.

In third place, surprisingly, comes NFC, which was omitted from Moto G4 phones. NFC is becoming popular for mobile payments, so it's understandable. This is quickly followed by design and internal memory. We thought its design was good, although the fingerprint button made it look unlike any previous Motorola phone. The normal G4 and G4 Play, however, share a nice design language that the critics are praising.

Did you miss the poll? Tell us what you think about the results.

Is Motorola Moto G 4th Generation Worth Buying ?

2016 Moto G's i.e Moto G4 , Moto G4 Play and Moto G4 Plus were launched few weeks back with amazing specifications . Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus are now available in few markets while Moto G4 Play will be available by the end of summer .

According to me , Launching Motorola Moto G4 is a big mistake done by Motorola and Lenovo . Either Motorola should have named Moto G4 Plus , The Moto G4 or They should have made 5 inch Smartphone called The Moto G4 ( with same specs as original Moto G4 ) .

Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus comes with same specification , Only the difference is Moto G4 Plus has a Fingerprint sensor and a 16MP Auto Laser Focus Camera . The difference between the two devices is only 1,000/- INR / 14.7$ .

Of course , one would buy Motorola Moto G4 Plus by spending 1,000/- extra . From Moto G 1st Generation to Moto G 3rd Generation , Motorola was pricing the Smartphone wisely . But This time it makes no sense of launching Moto G4 at a price of Moto G3 Turbo .

“Godless” malware affects 90% of Android devices

"Godless" a new mobile malware has been detected by Researchers at security intelligence blog Trend Micro . The Malware targets All Android Devices running 5.1 Lollipop and earlier Android versions i.e Approx 90% of the Android Devices .

Godless , after gaining root privilege remotely it can be controlled to silently install unwanted software on the affected device, or even to spy the user .

According to Trend Micro -

Based on the data gathered from our Trend Micro Mobile App Reputation Service, malicious apps related to this threat can be found in prominent app stores, including Google Play, and has affected over 850,000 devices worldwide.

Though the Malicious apps seems to have been removed from Google Play according to Trends Micro

We have also seen a large amount of clean apps on Google Play that has corresponding malicious versions – they share the same developer certificate – in the wild. The versions on Google Play do not have the malicious code. Thus, there is a potential risk that users with non-malicious apps will be upgraded to the malicious versions without them knowing about apps’ new malicious behavior. Note that updating apps outside of Google Play is a violation of the store’s terms and conditions.

If you are downloading apps from outside , make sure you have done a background check of the developer and the app . Downloading apps from Google Play seems much safer than outside apk's .

Seems , Android is getting prone to malware's . When the OS becomes too popular for public , then it becomes popular for hackers also !

Carl Pei responds to AnandTech's OnePlus 3 display criticisms

Back a while OnePlus revealed The OnePlus 3 , which seems to be One of the best Smartphone at this price range .

OnePlus 3 has gone through many reviews . Some people are saying OnePlus is buying reviews and Some people are saying approx All reviews are fake . Whatever it is ,We know all is Carl Pei is monitoring all the reviews .

Few days back , One of the renowned reviewer "AnandTech" Got their hands on The OnePlus 3 . AnandTech said that "OnePlus 3 Display really kills the Smartphone for me" .

Here's a little bit What AnandTech Said -

Unfortunately, the display really kills the phone for me. Based on every other aspect I think it would be a no-brainer to replace the Nexus 5X with the OnePlus 3 as my daily driver, even if it is bigger than I'd like. I simply can't though, because I just feel unpleasant whenever I look at the OnePlus 3's display. I don't think it's a stretch to say it's the worst display I've examined during my time at AnandTech, as despite the Nexus 6's faults it didn't have the ghastly blue appearance of the OnePlus 3.

And of course this is a bit insulting for a Company like OnePlus and This is how Carl Pei responded to it -

I'm sick and tired of sentiment like this. It may not seem so, but for a product company -- it's insulting.
It started with the OnePlus One, people trying to find explanations and faults that could have led to its reasonable price. People were complaining about screen variance (visible and common for LCDs, search for "iPhone yellow blue screen" images), vibration motor, and cheaper NAND, etc. Looking for any explanation, and quick to jump on bandwagons and to conclusions.
With our relationships in the supply chain, we know the BOM (bill of materials) of all other flagships. Out of all the devices that the OnePlus 3 gets compared to, it is one of, if not the most expensive to make. Do you think the price delta between a 2K AMOLED and a 1080p AMOLED is huge? It's a product decision, and spec by spec is not how to judge a product. The OnePlus 3 uses latest generation AMOLED made to our specifications by Samsung. The vast majority of our users, and reviewers love Optic AMOLED. It is NOT tuned to sRGB, and was never meant to be. sRGB tuning is a niche requirement and is not the right choice for the vast majority of smartphone users. Why do you think it's hidden under developer settings on the 6P? For those who need it, we've taken note, and have added it to the next OTA.
On the other hand, I get it. People simplify and use mental shortcuts to make sense of the world around them. Price = quality. We probably haven't done good enough of a job explaining our model, and we need to work on this going forward. I understand that sometimes, when our products don't have the highest absolute specs, it might look like corners are cut. This happens when people don't understand the product reasoning that went behind a choice. When we see this, we'll be increasingly vigilant about educating people. Over time, we hope that more people can understand our product philosophy of placing experience above specs. Product management is an art and not throwing together the highest specs. If that's what you're looking for, OnePlus is the wrong brand for you. This is also why I'm not the least worried about new device x or y that may have better specs, because I know it will not fare as well as the OnePlus 3 on the most important spec of them all: NPS.
Before finishing this rant, I want to make things really clear. There are no corners cut on the product, and there will never be. OnePlus cuts corners on business model (direct to consumer), org structure (nimble and fast team), and marketing (organic word of mouth focused).
